Mumtaz Mahal

Last night I went for a ruby murray with Mrs Sythe at the newly renovated Mumtaz Mahal. Now, it's been quite a few years since our last visit to the iconic curry house on the hill. I'm not really sure why we stopped going, I think because it was always full and you needed a reservation, you couldn't just turn up and have dinner.

The new renovations are both outside and inside, and include a canopy structure for the terrace outside, and the removal of the water feature on the inside, opening up the room. The old window slats have been replaced with new wooden blinds as well. The stage is still there but has been moved back a little and a lot of new art has been hung around the room, especially on the "art wall".

The staff all have new outfits, and the table-cloths are gone, with new tables and place mats and cutlery now making an appearance. Seating outside on the terrace (not quite ready yet - probably mid September) will be 10 tables, or up to 40 people, while inside there are tables of varying sizes to seat up to 130 people. Another new addition is the private banquet hall, which is a room which can be split into 2, each side seating 8 people comfortably, or 16 in it's extended format.

Now the pricing, I have to say, I was really surprised at. I had this opinion in my head that it was really expensive, but honestly it's the same price range as Traders or Pavo's or many of the other higher-tier restaurants in town. And it is a unique restaurant in this category - it's the only high-end curry house that I can think of in town.

Starters range from RO 2.200 to 3.400
Seafood mains range from RO 6.900 to 18.000 (lobster)
Lamb mains range from RO 5.500 to 9.000
Chicken mains range from RO 5.000 to 5.500
Vegetarian mains range from RO 2.500 to 3.500

There is also a very extensive (and new) wine list, with some wines available by the glass starting at around RO 4.000, and bottles starting around RO 20.000. Beers are available in draught (Tiger, Heineken and one other I can't remember - RO 3.200 a pint) as well as in bottles (many, but yes, Kingfisher is available).

The food on the menu is not, as is typical here in Muscat, almost all North Indian, there's dishes from all corners of India, including quite a few South Indian dishes (which I was happy to see). The food we ordered was all delicious, I highly recommend the Samosa's to start.

All in all, approximately RO 35.000 including taxes and service charge, 2 starters, 2 mains and a side dish, a shared desert, a couple of beers and a bottle of water for a nice dinner with live music and excellent waiting staff is a price I'm happy to pay again. Yes I could pop down to the local biriyani house and have a tasty curry, but it's not all about taste (although it's important, and there was no problem with the food we had at Mumtaz Mahal), it's about the ambience, the views and the service that make a trip out for a meal special.

You can call Mumtaz Mahal on 2460 5907 for more information and to make a reservation.

How To Turn Your Toned Abs Into Shredded Abs

Getting toned abs is really about getting your body fat level down to a low percentage. Getting down to a low body fat level doesn't involve special tricks at all. There are different methods to achieve this that work. To be honest, for a person to get toned abs they just basically need to be self-disciplined. Let us go through the basics.

Here's A Proven Strategy to Getting Toned Abs

The more body fat you have to lose to get down to a low body fat level, the easier it'll be to drop body fat. Take for instance, if a person needs to lose let's say 100 lbs of fat, it'll be a breeze burning off their first 20 lbs, if a person needs to lose just 25 lbs to get lean, they will have a much harder time dropping 20 lbs. The closer you come to getting lean the harder you are going to have to work to reach that goal. For that reason you'll need to increase the intensity level of your exercise to continue making progress. The closer you get to your goal the more intense your exercise should get.

Amazing Tip on How to Go From Toned Abs to Shredded Abs

I have never heard anyone talk about this. In order to get really shredded abs, you basically need to keep your body fat low for a long period of time. This is because it takes a while for your loose skin to tighten up and "fill in the grooves" in your abs. If you work on maintaining a reasonably low body fat percentage for over one year, I will guarantee you that you will love the way your abs look.

The Problem With "Bulking Up"

Lots of trainers recommend to people that they should eat excess calories during the winter and lift heavy to gain muscle. Then in the summer it is recommended that you hit cardio hard and burn off all that fat to get ripped. The problem with this approach is that your skin never has the time to really tighten up around your muscles. If you stay lean year round, you will eventually have better muscle definition than just about everyone in your gym. The nice thing about staying lean year round is that you look good all year, not just part of the time.

To Sum It Up - Work Your Way to A Low Body Fat Level and Keep it Low for 12 Months or More. This Is Your Ticket To Shredded Abs.

I've had a few comments on my youtube videos saying I have 'perfect skin'. I just thought I'd show you my 'almost bare' face so you can see that I do not. When I'm not filming videos or going anywhere fancy I tend to wear very minimal skin makeup. I find it kind of liberating being able to go barefaced and simply not care, plus I have breakout prone skin, so less makeup means less spots. As you can see I let my freckles, moles and scarring show through. This is the kind of makeup I like to wear to work, since it takes minimal amount of time and only uses one brush, but with the eyeliner and mascara it looks like I've made a bit of an effort. I'm wearing a VERY light layer of my Chanel Aqua Lumiere Foundation and I skipped concealer (Lazy). I finished off my skin by apply a tiny amount of blush and powder (Peach melba blush by natural collection and my rimmel stay matte powder) On my eyes I smudged on a bit of Indianwood paint pot with my fingers then applied my Maybelline gel liner in the water line. I finished the makeup with my L'oreal voluminous mascara, lip balm and a touch of powder through my brows.

Mackenzies deli reopens tomorrow

Some of you may be interested to learn that Mackenzies Deli will be reopening tomorrow morning from 7am. It's hours will be 7:00 until 20:00 every day. After the hugely popular launch just before Ramadan, the management decided to add more space to the cafe and have now finished their additional seating areas.

I am reliably informed that they are fully stocked with all of their carried products, including the pork products, as well as additional staff to serve as well. The tills appear to have been brought online and now there will be no further delays with payment related to the hand-written receipts.

Personally I'm looking forward to lunch tomorrow, I can never seem to get enough of their egg mayonnaise sandwiches!

Mackenzies Deli has a website here, and a facebook group here.

Times of Oman gets it wrong (again)

Well this week is flying by. I guess it was bound to happen - first week back to work after the Eid break, with piles and piles of paperwork to plough through, so I've been a lazy blogger. While having a coffee break in the office on Sunday, I read with much bemusement the front page cover story on the Times of Oman (the story is currently here, but I wouldn't be surprised if the story suddenly gets pulled).

In the ToO article, the journo, Rahul Das, gets it totally wrong, boldly proclaiming on the Sultanates oldest and most established English language newspaper front page (above the fold) that if you want to keep owning your business, you can't work for anyone else. Which is clearly not true, and I'm sure many of you with brains would have clocked that pretty quickly. As it happens I tweeted later in the day on Sunday that I thought this article was wrong, and apparently was late to the party led by local super-blogger, Riyadh "Blue-Chi" Al Balushi who quite correctly pointed out that Mr Das was barking up the wrong tree with his article.

You see, the recent Ministry of Manpower announcement made did indeed require owners of specific businesses to make it their sole form of employment, and thus to leave other jobs, eventually. The key word there is specific, as opposed to, you know, all (businesses).

However, thankfully today, the bright boys and girls down at Muscat Daily got it right, presumably after doing some actual, you know, investigation into the story, rather than just spouting out some sensationalist headlines. To quote the Muscat Daily's Shaddad al Musalmy:

"Ministerial Decision 420/2012 issued on July 22, 2012, owners of manpower agencies have to run the agencies themselves without handing them over to an expatriate.

Those who own manpower agencies cannot work in either a government department or in the private sector. This comes into force from May 1, 2014".

So, not quite what the ToO would have you believe then. Oops. I wonder if the ToO will print a retraction? I'm guessing not. heh. First class journalism at work again! To be fair to the ToO journalist, it's gotta suck, because we all make mistakes from time to time and I'm certainly no exception to that rule!

More tomorrow.
