Traffic Light Party tonight!

Ahh, Wednesday, you beauty. I've been waiting for you all week!

Tonight, at local nightclub, Zouk, there is a traffic light party. The Rugby Club ran one of these successfully earlier in the year, and there's no reason why tonight's party will not be a lot of fun too! You essentially wear one of three colours:

Green - single and looking
Yellow - not single but looking(!)
Red - not looking

There is a door cover charge in effect:

Free entry before 10:00pm
RO 10 for single men, which can be fully redeemed at the bar for food and drinks.
RO 20 for couples, which can be fully redeemed at the bar for food and drinks.
Single ladies enter with no cover all night.

Have a nice weekend!

Something positive to say about HSBC

I was quite amazed about this, I received a text message from the people at HSBC informing me to come and pick up my Entertainer 2011 book from any of the branches. The bit that amazed me was that it only took me 2 minutes to get the book and I didnt have to fill in 3 forms, or find out that I've got a new mysterious wife who has run up debts for me.

I nipped into my local HSBC branch and presented my ATM and one of my Credit Cards, and they provided me with a book full of vouchers from Entertainer 2011 - the vouchers expire on December 31st and dont work on certain days (Eid, National day, Christmas, etc) - but still, for a freebie, I think that's pretty decent. I already used one of the buy 1 main course get 1 free vouchers at my favorite Ruby Murray house in town: Passage to India.

So if you bank with HSBC and were not aware about this voucher book - nip into any HSBC in Oman with your HSBC ATM and Credit cards, and they should give you one of these voucher books!

Womens Guild of Oman

It's that time of year again, the WGO members card is due for renewal and the form to do so is below. It costs RO 10 this year, and will net you access to the very significant range of business partners of the WGO and their subsequent discounts at numerous venues around town. You can click here to see the list of business partners and associated discounts.

It's well worth getting the membership, and the WGO conduct activities throughout the year for their members, below is a snap shot of their diary for the next month or so.

One last point of note, there are still tickets available for the notorious Crystal Ball at the Shangri-la. RO 60 a pop, seems expensive but this is usually the premier ball of the year, and the swag given away to each attendee is usually pretty good too!

As usual, the very kind people at Hi FM and Alive Events have given me tickets to each event to give away in the coming weeks, so look for those give-aways in the near future!

Kaya Skin Clinic

Over the weekend I was invited to experience Kaya Skin Clinic's new treatment for facial skin... Aqua Radiance. Being a guy, I initially thought that there had been a mistake and suggested I sent my wife for the treatment instead, but the kind people at Kaya said that, no, it's actually a treatment for skin, men’s or women’s skin.

Having never had any sort of treatments like this in the past, I was a little nervous about the experience: Was it going to hurt? Was it going to be uncomfortable? And most importantly, was I going to be turned into a woman? After asking the boss and a few lady friends, I felt confident enough to go along and see what the experience was like. I think I heard them sniggering behind me but I cant be sure.

The Muscat clinic is located in Shatti, just off the newly dualized road from Al Fair Sarooj to the Bowsher Police station - it is on Way 3013, Villa 879. Firstly, parking is fairly cramped out front, but if you go to the rear of the building, there is a lot more parking space there.

I walked into the clinic and was immediately struck by how professional it looked. No dodgy salon here then. The staff was friendly and immediately the Manager popped out and said, "I assume you’re Mr Sythe then?”, which was handy, because I really was not feeling too confident and was grateful not to have to say more than I had to! I was whisked into a waiting room and offered a drink and a form to fill in.

After a brief chat with a doctor to review my skin type and for her to select the correct range of vitamins for application, I was off upstairs with the very capable Anita to receive my treatment.

It lasted for about an hour and a half and was very relaxing, I actually fell asleep at one point!
The treatment started off with a facial massage with some Aloe Vera gel, which was chilled and was really refreshing when massaged onto my face. After this massage, the real genius of the treatment came into effect - most of the treatment is administered via a supersonic air jet mixed with saline water.

First, they used the air massager to drain my lymphatic system, then cranked up the pressure a bit and did 2 passes on my face to exfoliate the skin. The science-y bit is the blasts of air penetrate deep into the skin, and as it's with water it is actually good for the skin. Clever.

Once the exfoliation was complete, the specially-selected vitamins and minerals were mixed into the air jet machine and infused into my skin - it felt so cooling and relaxing - I actually felt better and better as it was being applied. Then finally to wrap things up, a mask was applied to my face and left for 20 minutes... it turned all rubbery and peeled off in one piece! I would share a picture with you all of how I looked.... but it's too scary and so not this time!

All in all, I actually really enjoyed the experience. My skin really does feel refreshed, it looks clearer and it feels like it fits my face better - perhaps a little tighter? It feels good anyhow. The treatment costs RO 60 and lasts for 90 minutes, and is open to both men and women to try. The people at Kaya also mentioned that they do a lot of beard shaping treatments for men who like a finely manicured beard, which I never thought about.

You can call them on 2460 1700 / 2460 4300 to make an appointment - they have a lot of other services on offer, but the Aqua Radiance treatment is their specialty. So if you’re a husband and reading this and wondering what to get your wife for a gift.... consider this!

Reblog: Renting in Muscat

Well, Angry in Oman is back again, but with a decidedly un-angry post. It was disappointing at first but then I figured that the post is actually a very good and informative review of the various different estate agents in Muscat.

The winner of her review of estate agents is Engel & Völkers, based in Al Khuwair.
You can call them on 2447 2028.

Traffic...

Everyone these days loves to moan about the traffic: the jams, the dangers and the roadworks. The main reason for this afternoons blog is two-fold:

Tomorrow is World Car Free day, and it is being recognized locally in this facebook group. So if you don't need to drive tomorrow, try walking instead!

But the real driving (heh, geddit?) force behind this posting is the plight of the residents living in The Wave and surrounding areas in the morning. Ever since Eid, there has been something wrong with the traffic lights, with a green light for 6 seconds in the morning causing tail-backs that take up to 15 minutes to get through just to get to the highway! It's been going on for weeks with no apparent fix coming.

But the traffic nightmares don't stop there, do they? What on earth is going on at the Lulu's in Ghubra? There is 2 roundabouts where there was 1, and during peak traffic times, that is another 10 minute confusion. The roads there seem to be altered to cater for the new mall, and presumably the new planned link road from near McDonalds in Khuwair to the Muscat Expressway further South. Yet, seemingly just like when we hosted the Asian Beach Games - right before the roads really needed (when the mall opens in this case) the roads are all dug up! During the Beach Games, it was unbelievable - a month before the nation hosted its largest ever sporting event, they dug up the road to the venue.

Are you stuck in this traffic in the mornings up by Markez Al Bhaja? I'm told that Muscat Municipality, or the ROP are in charge of traffic lights in the city... fairly confusing then. Does anyone know when the traffic lights will be fixed?

In other news, MRFC are having their season openers this weekend, with a game against HMS Somerset tonight at 7:00 pm and a game against Al Ain on Friday at 3:00 pm with post match celebrations held at the Ghala Wentworth Golf Club.

Have a good weekend everyone!

OOTD: Rocking the Vintage...

I tweeted last night about an 80's vintage blazer my mum gave me and thought I'd pop it into an outfit of the day post. This outfit is pretty black, but I was only going to work. Had a rubbish day and got sent home from work after 2 HOURS! I hate this bloody recession. Starting my uni course very soon, I'm pretty excited but I'm going to be soon busy with that, and working a much as possible. I'm currently saving to move out, scary stuff!

My makeup is really minimal today as I was feeling so lazy. Just a touch of Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation, Maybelline black gel liner and L'oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black.

T-shirt : H&M
Skirt with Belt: New Look
Earrings: New Look
Necklace: Accessorize
Tights: M&S
Ring: Primark
Blazer: House of Fraiser 20-30 years ago

Hope you are all well :)

The Jebel Sifawy Boutique Hotel & TGI Fridays

The first of five hotels to be opened at the massive 6.2 million square meter development at Sifah, the Jebel Sifawy hotel is now finished, and set to open on Friday. The hotel has 55 rooms and has earned a 4* status and prices are starting at RO 65.000 per night when I just checked their website.

A word of warning though - as nice as the hotel is, they have yet to obtain their liquor license, so if you fancy a drink while relaxing - bring your own for the mean time. I understand that the license application and approval is in the final stages, and so it wont be a problem in the near future. The road is also not very car-friendly - it's possible to drive there in a car, but I'd recommend either using an all-terrain rental car (ie one you dont actually care about), or an actual SUV.

Now, tonight TGI Fridays are having a private launch, but tomorrow, the doors open to the general public.... I recommend their chicken wings :)

Have a good weekend.

The Lazy Lizard at the Radisson Blu

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of relaxing at the Lazy Lizard @ the Radisson Blu after a hard lunch-time effort in the bar watching New Zealand kick off the 2011 IRB Rugby World cup against Tonga (the All Blacks won, naturally). I was a little surprised to see Merge 104.8's wonder boy, Chris Fisher there, but still managed to poke him and say hello. I think. I'm not really too sure on the details.

But I would say that this Friday chill in the pool, with a big screen showing matches and plenty of tipples on offer is currently a well-kept secret - it was really nice and, um, chilled. Well worth a look if you are looking for a way to while away a long Friday afternoon in the coming winter months.

The Radisson Blu is in Al Khuwair at the large oval-bout, near to Automatic, and the institution of late night munchies, Istanboly.

More tomorrow!

Some local news and observations

On Saturday, Muscat Daily's cover proclaimed that the good men of the RNO (Royal Navy of Oman) put the smack down on some cheeky Somalian pirates. Here's a link to the story. With a follow up here and here.

Oman: not pirate friendly

Now, reading this objectively, I could get all conspiracy theorist and start wondering about if the mission was perhaps botched... 2 of the kidnapped crew were shot dead, and another 2 are apparently in critical condition, one of whom was shot nearly 10 times reportedly. But rather than dwell on that, I think what is more important to note is that the RNO boys have made it pretty clear to any Captain Jack Sparrow wannabees that they will bring the pain if they muck about in their waters. Which to be honest is exactly the right response, and if the countries surrounding Somalia conducted the same policy, things would not have become as endemic as they have. So, RNO - well done.

In other local news, tomorrow sees the by-now well publicized Oman Cat-Astrophy fund raiser book (and other things) sale at the Costain Dolphin Club. So in case you forgot: 3-9pm tomorrow.

A little Muttering I heard yesterday was that there has been yet another U-Turn in the ongoing story of Booze at the Royal Oman Opera House, and that now Alcohol licenses will be permitted for F&B outlets in the attached mall. More on that as it develops - and if you are reading this and know more, please share!

And finally..... There's some big acts coming to town brought by the lovely people at Hi FM and Alive Entertainment. More on that as things get closer, but its something that people should be pretty excited about!

More tomorrow!

September 11th - where were you?

Well, it is September 11th again. A date that is one I'll never forget for as long as I live. Everything changed as a result of this day. And this is the first anniversary of the atrocities committed that the nut case Osama Bin Laden will not be alive for.

For me, I was going to work in Edmonton, Alberta. I remember getting to work and wondering where everyone was, and then getting a call and then checking the internet and watching a stream as a plane flew into one of  the towers. Such a waste of life, there is not a lot else to be said. Spare a thought today for all of those people that have lost their lives as a result of terrorism everywhere in the world.

The 2011 Rugby World Cup

Well if you follow rugby, you will know that yesterday saw the opener of the 2011 world cup with New Zealand laying the smack down on Tonga. Because the tournament this year is being held in NZ, most games are screened at awkward times - time to make good use of the OSN recording function!

Posted below are all the fixtures for this World Cup, with all times posted being local Oman times for the kick offs.

And on a similar note : Tomorrow night from 5:00pm the Muscat Pirates junior rugby season starts: If you are interested in registering your kids, get to the MRFC pitch (next to ABA school in Al Khuwair) for 5 tomorrow afternoon.

Riots in Sohar last night (Monday September 5th)

Well it seems that there were some upsets in Sohar last night, with reports of people burning tires in the street and massing at some round abouts.

It's been written about on an Arabic forum, www.omaniaa.net here (English Google Translate here) and the pictures posted on the blog are taken from that forum.

Coincidentally, local Sohar bloggers Dan & Jillian blogged this morning that there was heavy police presence at a round about in Sohar, presumably a result of last nights excitement. It does not look anything like the scenes we saw before earlier in the year, and at the time of posting, the main road through Sohar is open.

More news if it develops.

News update: Riots in Batinah region again

Just in now... there are riots again in the Batinah region, with the highway being blocked again. Special thanks to @BaderHinai for updating us and sharing the pictures. The riots are in Suwaiq / Sohar.

More news later if it develops. Apparently they are reaffirming their demands from before. It does not appear to be a peaceful demonstration.

An Update:

Local Twitterati Muscati has another take on the events:

From what I hear there was an accident involving a large truck at one of the highway crossings which resulted in the blocking of the highway. The people of the area gathered around the truck in protest demanding that government should do something to reduce the number of accidents at that crossing by either building a roundabout or putting traffic lights. People who were passin their way to or from Sohar saw the commotion and started to broadcast the news that are new protests in Sohar and people are blocking the road again without stopping to get the actual story.

Royal Opera House - Opening October 14th, 2011

Well, it was in the papers yesterday, and radio adverts are now also playing out: The Royal Oman Opera House is having it's inaugural performance on Friday 14th of October. I've heard some mutterings that there is actually a private showing on Wednesday the 12th, but none of the official marketing is suggesting this, so I guess if there is anything on the 12th, it will be by invitation only.

Tickets, for the Opera, are actually surprisingly reasonably priced, ranging from RO 17 to RO 60 - but currently the website does not actually allow you to purchase the tickets (it pretends that you can, but you actually cant). You have to go to the Box Office, or to the Hyatt or InterCon, with cash - no credit cards (yet).

You can click here for a list of all the performances this year, and their respective ticket prices.

The mall is 2 levels, 6500 square meters and there have been lots of rumors about what exactly will be in the mall - but nothing confirmed yet. If I get any information I'll share it :)

In other news - the Undercover Dragon over at Muscat Confidential has woken up from his nap and is blogging about the Wikileaks cables. Some good reading!

More soon!

Victoria's Secret coming to Oman...

I hope you all had a nice Eid break and got to relax and all that stuff. I spent most of it moving house and discovering a few alarming truths about some shops here - thats for another day!

A special thanks to a reader who thoughtfully emailed over a picture of a job advert posted on Gulf Talent - it seems Al Shaya are hiring for the position of Store Manager for a new store in Oman - Victoria's Secret.

I'm assuming that this store will open in either Muscat City Center or Qurum City Center, but perhaps it will be in the new Muscat Grand Mall - I guess time will tell. Anyway,

VOGUE Fashion's Night Out 2011

So next week is Vogue Fashion's Night Out... I first heard about the event, or shopping experience on twitter last year but was too busy to go and London is so far away for a little country girl like myself :) Literally by coincidence, this year I shall be in London all weekend to visit a friend so I have decided to go up a day early to see what all the fuss is about. Now, if like myself earlier self, are not quite sure what these frivolities include I shall explain...

Think of VFNO as a late night shopping experience, combined with celebrities, models, champagne and cocktails, nibbles, competitions and goody bags. The best part is, because you are essentially there to make the stores money, entry is free and does not require a ticket (bar a few exceptions like some PR parties.

I would seriously recommend coming along to take in the great atmosphere, find some bargains (most shops are offering around 20% discount on the night)and meet to lovely people, including lots of gorgeous beauty and fashion bloggers! It takes place on Thursday 9th September in and around Soho, mainly of Oxford and Regents street I think.

I shall provide links for all the information you require and I hope to see some of your there. If you have an iPhone I recommend downloading the VFNO App to help find your way around. If you do intend to go please let me know so I can say hello! I shall be tweeting prior to, and throughout the evening to let you know where I am heading. I shall also vlog and blog the event for anyone who is curious, now I just need to decide what to wear...

Sarah's Guide to VFNO

P.S Apologies for the website pictures, I'm recovering from having my wisdom teeth removed and I'm not feeling up to getting the camera out, sorry!

Much Love,
Onna
