It's official: Private Sector work week now 5 days, EID holidays announced

Well it's been quite the morning so far.

The Public Sector has had significant amendments to the labour laws, here's my sumary:

1. Workers now get 30 days leave a year (it used to be 15 for the first year, and then 30)
2. Workers get 6 days emergency leave.
3. The working day is to be 9 hours a day, 45 hours a week. People can work up to 12 hours per day if they choose to, but for over-time to be paid it is base rate + 25%.
4. Women get 50 days maternity leave for up to 3 children during service, which can be taken before and after birth - 50 days max in total. No Maternity leave for men is mentioned.

Thats better than it was, so it's good to see strong development in the labour laws here, I'm sure there are a lot of happy campers out there today. And grumpy Contractors.

Now, Eid has been announced as Sunday 6th November, and holidays are as follows:

Government Sector: Saturday 5th - Wednesday 9th, returning to work on the 12th November
Private Sector: Saturday 5th - Tuesday 8th, returning to work on the 9th November

Now, there is also a rain cloud coming to Muscat, via Masirah (which is where it's at right now). Nothing to get excited about, its just going to rain and thunder a fair bit over the next few days.

Special thanks to @BaderHinai
Snake Gorge should be nice and full of water for the Eid holidays then. Result.

If you have not already, why not have a go at winning the 2 VIP tickets to JaySean / Shontelle concert on Wednesday November 9th that I'm giving away, click here for more details - it's free to enter and I don't give the email addresses to anyone.

One last question - does anyone know why Costa Coffee in MQ stinks like shit? It's really gross in there.

Farm Alarm this Eid

So there are lots of events being held in town for Eid, and just so everyone knows, I understand bars will be open from Wednesday at the usual time (I have heard whisperings of some bars opening on Tuesday 30th at 7:00pm but not sure!).

Anyway, something with a twist: Farm Alarm

It's a party at a farm, surprisingly!

It's RO 5 for girls, RO 10 for guys and there is a free BBQ and drinks and shisha available to purchase. For more details call 9665 9666, 9289 9513 or 9676 7323.

Eid Mubarak!

Well, just off the wire - Government Sector holidays have been declared by Royal Order!

That's a little odd because normally it is not announced via Royal Order, but this is the information I've received so here it is:

Monday (29th August) thru Sunday (4th September) are to be holidays, with a return to work on Monday 5th September.

I'll update this as more information comes in - if it's not accurate I apologize, and please comment if you have something to add!

Update: Private Sector holidays announced:
Tuesday 30th August thru Saturday 3rd September, returning to work on Sunday 4th September.

Just a quickie: EID is announced as August 31st

It's been announced this year that Ramadan is to be 30 days, and that Eid will fall on August 31st (a Wednesday) this year. Oman's stepping away from it's normal tradition of a Moon Sighting Committee and going with Astronomical Calculations this year... a first apparently.

As for how long the holidays will last, that is still subject to rumors... but the first day will be Wednesday August 31st. The news was announced via Sabq, and presumably will be in the papers tomorrow.
