Happy Canada Day!

Well, it's July 1st again - which means, of course, that it's Canada day. And this year, 2012, marks Canada's 145th birthday. So happy birthday Canada.

This Wednesday of course sees July 4th, when Canada's smaller neighbour, the USA, celebrates it's own independence day, and so I'm sure we will see a few combined North American parties taking place around the city. Speaking of, The Safari bar at the Hyatt are marking Canada day with special Canada-themed food tonight (poutine!!!!!!!), along with showing the Euro's final at 10:45pm. The Safari are also throwing an Independence Day party for the yanks on Wednesday the 4th as well. In fact the festive spirit runs from the 1st till the 4th.

Back to the main purpose of this blog post, here's some fun facts about Canada (other than it's just awesome):

MRFC starts pre-season fitness training

Here we are, once again arriving at the start of July. 40'c at 6:30pm and 75% humidity? Perfect for pre-season fitness training for the 2011-12 Gulf Conference champions, Muscat Rugby Football Club. Starting tomorrow night, Sunday 1st July, and every Sunday and Tuesday thereafter until mid September, the MRFC squad will be under the direction of Steven Little, from Muscat's premier cross-fit trainers, Muscat Innerfight.

So if you are feeling the strain from the Muscat summer inches phenomenon which seems to happen once it gets too hot to do anything other than drive to and from air conditioned places and waistlines expand, why not consider coming down and joining in with the misery fun of pre-season fitness with the rugby team.

This map shows where the MRFC grass pitch is (although it is closed until September) as well as the ABA School. The summer fitness sessions take place on the astroturf tennis courts by the entrance to the ABA school every Sunday and Tuesday from 6:30pm.

As an aside, the MRFC are now selling Social memberships to the MRFC. These social memberships cost RO 40 and the fees will go towards paying the ever-increasing transportation costs to attend matches across the GCC. Now the MRFC don't expect you to hand over RO 40 for just the goodwill of the club, and so we have negotiated with the lovely people at the Hyatt the following deal for all MRFC members (playing or social):

  • Habana Bar:
    • 40% off drinks until 22.00 and a 20% discount on all beverage consumptions after 22.00.
  • Safari Rooftop and Safari pub:
    • 10% discount
  • 20% discount on food & beverages in the following outlets:
    • Tuscany Italian Restaurant
    • Mokha Café
    • Sirj Tea Lounge
    • John Barry Bar
    • Marjan Indonesian Restaurant & Pool Bar
    • Copacabana Nightclub
  • Pool Access is as follows:

    • 01 October 2012 until 30 April 2013, free pool access during weekdays (Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday); 50% discount on any other day.
    • 01 May 2013 until 30 September 2013, any day.
    • 01 October 2013 until 30 April 2014, free pool access during weekdays (Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday); 50% discount on any other day.
    • 01 May 2014 until 31 July 2014, any day.
    • Blackout dates due to high occupancy are: 22 December 2012 to 11 January 2013 (both days inclusive) Eid or any other Public Holidays in between 01 October 2012 and 30 April 2013
  • Advantage Membership Program:
    • MRFC members get a discount of 25% when purchasing the Advantage membership.
  • Rooms at the Hyatt:
    • The hotel offers a special rate for MRFC members for a Grand Room of OR 50.000 (Omani Rial Fifty) plus service charge and tax (OR 58.700NET) room only for single or double occupancy. Only available on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
  • Club Olympus Membership:
    • 40% Discount on any Club Olympus Membership for any MRFC member.

Yes, you read that right: Free pool access to the Hyatt pool. For RO 40 a year as a MRFC member. That sure beats the RO 600 price tag that comes with the InterCon pool membership.....

If you would like to sign up as a social member, and get access to these great perks, as well as support rugby in Muscat, please do drop me an email: mrsythe [at] gmail.com.

Mackenzies Cafe & Deli now open

I blogged about it 2 months ago, and now it's open. Mackenzies opened for business last Thursday afternoon and is open every day from 8-8, including Fridays. The store is located in MQ, in the same building as Costa Coffee, just next to the Busy Bees nursery (behind Subway).

The place is split into 2: a Cafe at the front with lots of comfortable seating, and then at the back is the deli selling freshly imported products ranging from salmon & mussels, to fresh beef, lamb and pork products. The cafe has sandwiches which change every few days, and there is even freshly baked bread flown in from, I think the lady said, Belgium.

It is my understanding that everything for sale in the deli is freshly imported, nothing is frozen. Prices are, when considering that everything is air-freighted in, and taxed heavily, not too bad. But most importantly there are a lot of products available in the store that I've not seen for sale anywhere else.

Freshly made pies, ready for you to take home and bake in your oven, are also available, along with an extensive fresh olive selection and more. It's certainly worth a look in, I was quite pleased to get a jar of lemon curd (not seen that for sale here before)!

Get your funk on

At last, the weekend is once again upon us. I was beginning to wonder if it would ever arrive, but here we are on Wednesday. Just a little post today for anyone still left in the city after the mass exodus of teachers and mums + kids last week.

Tonight, at the Copacabana nightclub in the Grand Hyatt there is a 70's night tonight "The Disco Funk". Personally I think a 90's night would have gone down better in the Copa, seeing as that was the last time it had a make-over, just love the neon in there! But it's a 70's disco gig, so get your best Village People outfits on and come down and show everyone you know the moves to YMCA.

Darren Shortt is providing the tunes, and the doors open at 9. Free entry until midnight, and I understand a cover charge after - until 3am. If you happen to want to get a costume for the night, there is actually a fancy dress costume hire shop here in Muscat: OJ's Costume Hire which I think is pretty cool.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Omani product spotlight: Oman Oasis Oxiplus water

Time for another semi-regular post on local Omani products that I use. This one's possibly the most-used Omani product (except petrol!) in my house - might not be but perhaps it is: It's the Oman Oasis "Oxiplus" bottled water.

As best as I can remember, this water turned up on the shelves 3 years ago, sometime in 2009 I think. It claims it has 300% more oxygen in it's water and I'm happy to believe it. They could probably also claim it had loads of vitamins in it and it'd make me thin too and I'd believe it because I'm stupid like that. We also use a water cooler service, which is not Oman Oasis, but I like these bottles because they are big (2 litres) and handy to take out and about with me.

What kind of water do you use in your house?

Bloggers get in trouble

This month has been a pretty bad one for bloggers here in the Sultanate. It all kicked off with a statement on the 4th of June from the Public Prosecution office stating:

“The Public Prosecution recently noticed the growing of offensive writings and inciting calls by some individuals under the pretext of free expression of opinion. This is a blatant violation of the sanctity of the personal life of individuals. It is also a libel against them either in their individual or job capacity. It has been noticed that rumours and provoking others to carry out negative acts that may eventually harm the homeland, individuals and national interests are growing.

These statements or acts are contrary to our elite religious teachings, rich traditions and noble morals that are deeply integrated in the Omani society and contrary to the values on which its sons are being raised upon.

They are also creating a reality that is against public law and order and morals. Moreover, they are legally criminalised regardless of the audio, print, visual, telecommunications and IT means used in this. These means include e-forums and social networking websites.

Henceforth, the Public Prosecution advises all citizens and residents that it will take the necessary legal actions against perpetrators of such statements or acts, as well as those who promote or provoke or assist them through any means.”

This was shortly followed a couple of days later with the announcement that a number of Omani bloggers and writers had been arrested. From various news reports, it seems as many as 22 people were arrested. It seems that all of these 22 people were members of the Arabic online Omani community - not all necessarily Omani, but Arab of some description, living, and more importantly, writing/commenting/tweeting/blogging in Oman.

I have to admit that this development did get me a little concerned, as I have been brutally honest in my experiences with HSBC here in the Sultanate, as well as Horizon Gym amongst others. But I guess what's done is done, and Horizon Gym to be fair to them turned it around into a positive and made a better effort at removing peoples numbers from their contact list. HSBC just chose to ignore me, which is totally fine by me, but I understand that my rant was read by the senior management of the bank here. I do still use them as my bank, but thats simply because I don't want to go through the nonsense of setting everything up with another bank here. I never did get my Al Fair vouchers!

So, back to the topic at hand, the bloggers plight in the Sultanate. As best put by a comment I read over on the Dragon's blog yesterday, some handy rules for writing about Oman on the internet, when you live, or are present in, Oman:

- Don't make unsubstantiated claims that may offend the pride of a powerful individual or entity, nor anything controversial which may invoke strong negative reactions from a group of people.
- Don't question the competence, decisions or rulings of the authorities.
- If you were to decide to raise an issue, make your points vague enough so your intended subject could not be construed as a direct criticism.

E.G., apply a bit of common sense. We are living in an absolute monarchy here in Oman, with a benign Dictator at the helm. I say benign, because look at how bad things can go.... look at what that lunatic Gaddafi got up to in Libya. Life here, in general, is pretty damn good, and HM is primarily to thank for that. There are hospitals, highways, schools, growing business outside of the oil & gas sector and various elements of democratic reform ongoing and a whole bunch more developments taking place. There are even 2 new Universities (that I'm aware of at least) rolling out (Universities of Buraimi and Ibra) as a result of the demonstrations held across the Sultanate last year. And women's rights in Oman are a hell of a lot better than those in other GCC countries. We are living in the worlds most charming police state.

I don't read Arabic but what I understand these arrested people did was directly criticize the top man himself for a number of reasons. As I wrote above... we are in the Sultanate of Oman, where the Sultan rules absolutely - whether that's "right" or "wrong" it is how things are here, and is the rule of law. So one can obviously understand why there has been a crack down - if someone was saying openly that your head of state was "something not very nice" and calling people to protest and strike, well would you not want to act?

Now of course a bunch of the free speech brigade have condemned these recent arrests, with the most notable being the Human Rights Watch, which called this flood of arrests 'A campaign of intimidation', and Amnesty International who referred to it as a 'blatant attempt to stamp out freedom of speech'. Strong words indeed, and perhaps true. To me it looks like a way to try and ensure we dont get a repeat of the 2011 "spring". Obviously heavy-handed actions do not always work too well, we've Libya, Egypt, Bahrain and of course Syria as all-too uncomfortable reminders of what can happen. I remain confident that no one in the Sultanate wants what has happened in these countries to happen here. I still believe that the root of the problem lies within the rising cost of living and the difference between the number of new jobs created each year and new of-age Omani's who are looking for these jobs. An age-old problem effecting countries in every corner of the world. Oman has become a victim of it's own success with a population larger than it can potentially sustain at this time, and there is no quick fix for this. Business must be stimulated to create jobs, but constant strikes and protests by elements of the national workforce does not instil confidence in foreign investors to stimulate business and thus jobs. Round and round we go.

It seems to me that this recent crack down and news releases are mainly tied to 2 issues: 1 don't incite hate towards the State (eg insult the Sultan / call people to protest / etc.) and, 2, be warned that libel / defamation of businesses will be enforced.

Part 1 I don't have an issue with, I'm a guest here and ultimately if I really don't like it, I'll leave - I'm free to do so beyond my Contractual obligations with my employer. As for the plight of Omani nationals living here... that's not something I am going to get into. It's Part 2 that really gets me a little unsure of things:

Libel is defined as a published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation; a written defamation. Defamation is defined as a false accusation of an offence or a malicious misrepresentation of someone's words or actions.

Now I am always careful about what I actually blog about, but in nearly 3 years of writing, I've of course ruffled a few feathers of businesses here, but the real issue is comments. The legal question is, the comments are hosted on a blog which is hosted outside of Oman, and there is no way to guarantee that the poster of any such comment is even in Oman when they comment, and so how can a prosecuting company claim libel (per the laws of Oman) on something that may have been written by a Frenchman, living in Spain, hosted on a sever in the USA? I suspect that this wont be even considered and it'll be me, the blog owner that gets it in the neck. Heavy handed, but perhaps effective.

This has been the reason why I generally do not moderate comments on this blog to date - being that I follow the rules of the USA (where the blog is physically hosted - and also why I state if I received a payment or benefit for a blog article) and true freedom of speech and expression is allowed there. And as the libel laws in the Sultanate have not changed in years - I shall continue to carry on as I have, not moderating comments. There is a spam-filter that automatically moderates blog posts it considers is spam, and I will, in very, very rare occasions remove a comment if it directly insults a specific person by name - this isn't a business and I don't want legal fees if at all I can avoid them.

Desert Voices book

Now I always try and do what I can for charity around town, and this is no different. Outward Bound Oman is looking to raise funds to support the local chapter of Outward Bound here.

The General Manager, Mark Evans, has written a book - Desert Voices  - about crossing the empty quarter in Oman. It’s 180 pages and beautifully illustrated by one of NZs leading landscape photographers, John Smith. All proceeds go to fund Omani young people from government schools on an OBO course.

For a high-quality coffee-table book, I think the price is great - 20 RO per book, 6 books for 100 RO, and you can get them signed too. And you know your proceeds are also going towards a good cause as well.

You can order your own copy from OBO by emailing accounts@outwardboundoman.com or getting in touch with them via their Facebook page. They have no problem shipping this book out world-wide either.

OOTN: Girls Night

Dress & Tights from New Look

Dubai Summer Surprises & Modhesh world

Imagine my surprise when a few weeks ago, I was invited by Dubai Events & Promotions to visit Dubai last weekend to experience the launch of the 15th edition of the Dubai Summer Surprises event? So, this past weekend Mrs Sythe & I went up to Dubai to make the most of the holiday, tour parts of Dubai we'd never been to before, and see just how much punishment my credit card could take in the sales.

The summer event known as Dubai Summer Surprises is in it's 15th year of operation, and kicked off this last weekend on the 14th June and will run until the 14th July. If you happen to have children who are not running away to cooler climes for the summer, there really is quite a lot on to keep the little ones entertained and happy. Obviously, this DSS is not just for kids, it's also for big kids too - lots of sales in the malls and special offers on hotels and spas.

In a nut shell, the Dubai Summer Surprises event consists of: Free kids shows in most of the malls in Dubai (Ice Age 3, Spongebob Squarepants, Barbie, The Smurfs and more..), special promotional prices in hotels all over the city, some incredible deals for some of the many spa's in Dubai. And, of course, the indoor theme park for kids known as Modhesh world.

A brief round-up of some of the events in the next month.
I went to the launch of Modhesh world on Thursday evening and was impressed by the sheer size of the place. Think of the kids play-area in Muscat City Centre, multiplied by a factor of about 35 and you may be starting to get into the right size of this place. The best bit is the price: it's Dhs 10 to enter (kids under 2 are free) and if you were a kid I'm fairly sure you'd find more than a few things to do that would leave you totally exhausted (a happy parent is one with a sleeping child right)? This years version of Modhesh world runs until August 25th and is situated in the World Trade Centre.

Modhesh world is open daily from 10am, except on Fridays where it opens at 2pm - it closes at 10pm except on the weekend or Eid where it closes at midnight. Ramadan timings are 6pm - 1am. I walked around this place for about an hour and still did not see everything that there was to do there, for about $2.65, I think it's exceptional value for money.

Now, back to the big kids and their needs. I visited the following malls: Festival City, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Mall, Mirdiff City Centre, Ibn Battuta Gate, Mercato Mall & Burjuman. Every single mall had shops offering sales - not every single store, but a lot of them. Also, in some malls (for example Mercato) if you spend over a certain amount of money you get an entry into a free prize draw for a car. So if you are going up to Dubai for a weekend of shopping, its worth while to know about some of these offers.

All in all, it was a fun weekend, I got some killer deals in the sales, had a little visit to a spa (more on that another day) and saw hundreds of kids with the biggest smiles on their faces having a great time. Hopefully I have helped some of you with kids here in the summer months find something fun to do on a weekend. Dubai is, after all, only an hour's plane ride away.

Brad Pitt Body In Fight Club - How To Get A Fight Club Body Like Brad Pitt

Have you seen the movie Fight Club with Brad Pitt? In the movie Brad Pitt had an average build as far as muscle size goes, however his muscle tone was amazing. In fact, If you have been lifting for any period of time, you probably have more muscle size than Brad Pitt had in Fight Club. Women tend to like this type of physique over an overly muscular body almost all of the time. If you want to impress guys in the gym, then by all means, gain a load of muscle mass. If you want to attract women, then aim for that lean and muscular look like Brad Pitt in Fight Club.

Don't Kid Yourself. It Is More Difficult To Become Lean Than it is to Get Big

Guys in the gym never end amazing me. These dudes are always impressed by the bulky bodybuilder guys who lift heavy weights, but have very little muscle tone. I hear them all the time saying stuff like "that guy can bench 405 for 6 reps", "that guy has 20 inch arms" etc. Most of these huge guys never reach a low enough body fat percentage to see any great muscle tone. I keep my body fat levels to 6% year round and don't get much respect from the guys in the gym, but the girls give me a lot of attention. Honestly, getting big takes very little self discipline. If you progressively lift heavier weights in the 6-12 rep range and eat like a pig you will get big!

Getting Too Big Will Give You a Cheesy Look

I hate to rip so hard into bodybuilders, but can we retire the Everlast clown pants? Seriously, you have to know what I'm talking about. How about those guys that wear those spandex pants or tank tops that they cut to make smaller? Is there a worse group as far as style goes than bodybuilders? Style is very important to women. If you get too big, then you can't even wear normal jeans. Big guys also look stupid when they try to dress up. You can never look GQ or hip if you are too big. Don't get mad at me if you are big, I'm just here to help.

A Simple Plan to Get a Lean "Fight Club Body".

Hopefully I've persuaded a few people to lose the clown pants and come back to a reality where women will talk with you again. It is simple, but not easy to get a Fight Club Body. I would recommend workouts with only 20 minutes of lifting followed by 40-60 minutes of cardio. Make sure to start your cardio session with high intensity interval training. If you don't know how to perform cardio in that manner, then enter that term into Google. Low intensity cardio only works to get you down to around 10 to 12 percent body fat, if you want to get really toned then you are going to have to work cardio hard. As far as eating goes, don't obsess with protein. You don't need a ton of protein to maintain a lean body. The main thing is to keep your total calories consumed lower than what you burn. I am about 185 pounds and consume about 1500-1800 calories per day spread over 3 meals. Whenever I do the 6 meal approach, I can't keep the calories low enough to lose body fat. If you can eat 6 smaller meals and keep the calories low, then you can use that approach. Here's to Achieving a Fight Club Body
