Radio Wars: A New Hope

This is a continuation from my previous post, The Phantom DJ (which you can read by clicking here)

We left off with the Galactic Empire (Hi FM) having banished the Ewoks (Sultanate of Oman Radio) to their tree village, and busily setting about running their empire (radio station) in the galaxy (Oman). This might make more sense to you if you watch the Star Wars films. Or not. Is there really anyone out there that has not seen a Star Wars film?

And so, as it seems impossible to satisfy everyone with one single radio station, a new rebel alliance was formed to take on the dominating Hi FM. And so the rumours began at the end of 2010 that there was going to be a new English language radio station coming to Oman. The rebel alliance was growing, and eventually their name and branding was leaked online by the Undercover Dragon in April this year. Previously people were referring to it as "Sabco Radio".

Merge 104.8 now had a name, and shortly after the leak announced that they plan to launch at 7am on Tuesday the 7th of June. Just like HiFM, Merge have begun their test transmissions around the city (and country?) and you can listen in on 104.8 on your radio dial right now. I understand they are only broadcasting during some hours of the day, but the music sounds pretty fresh, but at least to my ears, from the same playlist that Hi FM is playing from.

The lines are now drawn: 7am on Tuesday the 7th June (thats next week) Merge will launch their assault upon the Galactic Empire that is Hi FM. I wonder if the Ewoks Sultanate of Oman Radio 90.4 guys and girls will roll out anything new as well at this time?

Hi FM have already changed their presenters (Erin last year, Rachey Roo (Now on Dubai 92.5) & Chris Marsden removed, and Marcus added recently this year, along with syndicated shows from Roger Sanchez and Ryan Seacrest) and have notably changed their sound and are playing more US Billboard top 100 music in the day and more dance music in the evening. Darren and Kathy are still going strong too. I wonder if they will finally start reading the news?

In contrast, Merge have the talented (and regionally experienced - in Dubai) presenter Chris Fisher for the morning show (so going head to head against Darren) and British lass, Sayeh Stone pulling the evening drive-time show and will be facing up to seasoned HiFM presenter, Erin Fleming.

Merges secret weapon appears to be dance music, with radio shows from the following acts lined up for each night (which to be honest looks awesome): Hed Kandi, Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed, Carl Cox, Armin Van Buuren, Adam Beyer and even Eddie Halliwell. It'll be interesting to see how Hi react to this, as they currently have Roger Sanchez, Global Dance Sessions and Aly & Fila Future Trance in their dance line up. Being a fan of dance music I'm pretty pleased about this development!

A special thanks to @O3mer for the image

HiFM have already made a pre-emptive strike against Merge by rolling out a forced listening campaign (as it's known in the biz, I'm told). Hi FM are giving away business class tickets to Paris to see the Black Eyed Peas in concert, VIP backstage passes, and also the hotel - all you have to do is wait until the alarm is sounded in the morning or afternoon drive time shows and then text in - it's a clever campaign because it'll surely keep people listening to them for a chance to get the tickets.

And to us, the listeners, go the spoils of war... more music, more choice, more prizes. As Mr Burns likes to say - Exxxxxxxxcellent.

Lets see what Merge have up their sleeves next week then!

More tomorrow.

Radio Wars: The Phantom DJ

In the beginning, there was 90.4 Oman FM. I remember driving around in my rented Mitsubishi Lancer and invariably getting completely lost every time I tried to find something and had the lovely people on Oman FM to help me through my latest quest to find.... Lulu's.

It was nearly Ramadhan, and the radio presenter, some Australian/Indian sounding lady was running a quiz of nursery rhymes on air. I seem to recall she was in Salalah for the Khareef. People were calling in to try and finish the nursery rhyme to win a prize. And rather amusingly, if they didn't complete it properly, this woman would berate them, sometimes even calling these people stupid, and then never actually tell us the answer! I thought it was hilarious, in a cruel twisted way, but honestly, I would just be driving around, totally lost with absolutely no idea where I was, but would be laughing at the absolute ruthlessness of this radio lady. My most favourite moments would be when she cut people off that were chirping because she said something like, "no, you got it wrong stupid!" and half way through their defence they get cut off. hahahahaha. Evil lady, I loved it!

Faiq in the morning was amusing too, you could hear him turning the newspaper as he read it out on air, along with the nearly daily playback of Puff the Magic Dragon each morning. One of his regular listeners, Mr Angry, must have had a free meal at the Radisson every week as well :P

Along with the fascinating news jingle (still in use today I think) and the amusing 30 seconds to 5 minutes of random dead-air, I felt thoroughly like I was destined to finally give in and buy an ipod. Now I should mention here that I'm totally anti-apple. Why? I'm not really sure, I just don't like them. And that's really all the excuse I need not to like a product really.

And then one day I heard that there was a new radio station coming to Muscat. I hit auto-search and it landed on 95.9, and, in full stereo was Avril Lavigne's Girlfriend. It was October 2007, and there was a new Phantom DJ on the radio waves. They played modern music, it sounded clear and in stereo, and there was no classical music on it! Score!

Enter Hi FM. It was the end of January, 2008 when they finally launched, under much fanfare here in Muscat. I think purely because they broadcasted their signal properly (and thus in stereo as opposed to mono) and they had real native English speaking DJ's and played a style of music that was not trying to satisfy everyone in the country, it very quickly built a large audience, leaving poor old Sultanate of Oman radio in their wake. It wasn't all rosy though, Hi FM made mistakes (Rachey Roo) and I certainly had my fun poking Darren Shortt on this very blog at the time. To their credit, Oman FM 90.4 has gotten better - they don't have any dead-air these days, and they even play dance music in the evenings sometimes.

And everyone in the city now had a new, comparably decent, radio station to listen to that played modern music, and lots of it. Quite why Darren insisted on playing Scooter so much I've never really understood. I like to think that someone deleted all of the Scooter tracks from the Hi FM music computer one night, and I'm glad we don't have to hear Scooter any more!

In terms of Star Wars (my theme here...) Hi FM became the Galactic Empire, Sultanate of Oman Radio 90.4 became the Ewoks and were left to play in their tree village with their friends. The Galactic Empire were dominating the radio waves, playing whatever they wanted and living happy in the knowledge that they were on top.

But, the winds of change started to blow once more.

The Ice Cream Crawl 2011!

This is a re-post from local restaurant review blog, Omani Cuisine (well worth reading by the way).

--

The Omani Cuisine knows that there is no better cure to the crazy heat of the summer than some delicious cold ice cream, and to help our lovely readers pick the best ice cream place in Muscat, the Omani Cuisine decided to go on a mission next week to have ice cream at all the major ice cream places in town in one single day - we will try them out, compare their offerings, and decide by the end of the day which place serves the best ice cream!
The Ice Cream Crawl will take place on Sunday the 29th of May and its program will be as follows:
  • 3.00pm to 3.45pm – Pinkberry  - Muscat City Center
  • 3.45pm to 4.15pm – Baskin Robins – Muscat City Center
  • 4.30pm to 5.15pm – Tropical – BankMuscat HQ
  • 5.30pm to 6.15pm – Dream Cone – Zakher Mall
  • 6.30pm to 7.15pm – Il Gelato di Bruno – Oasis by the Sea
  • 7.30pm to 8.00pm – Marble Slab Creamery  - Qurum City Center
  • 8.00pm to 9.00pm – Cold Stone – Qurum City Center
  • 9.15pm to 9.45pm – Softy – Ruwi
In hope of making a fair and proper judgement of the ice creams we have on this crawl, the Omani Cuisine has sought the professional assistance of former Forbes Journalist Stephanie Dahl who will be featured heavily as a guest blogger on this mission.
All of our readers are welcome to come cheer for us (and have some ice cream) at any of the places shown in the program above at the timings indicated. It would be fun to meet you guys in person and learn about what you consider to be the best ice cream in town!
You can RSVP to attend the Ice Crawl on Facebook here.

It is once again that time of year

It is again time for the fabulous ANZO ball, and yes, second behind only the Canadian Stampede (I'm biased, but it really is not quite as awesome as the Stampede - different type of party).

Those that know, know. The tickets to this gig sell out in MINUTES every year. It's a shame there is not a bigger ball room in the city.

Perhaps I'll see you there?

Have a great weekend everyone!

Banking with HSBC in the Sultanate

It's amazing how little things in life really can get under your skin. Having lived here in the Sultanate for nearly 4 years, I've learned a lot about lowering my expectations about things. I've even found new levels of non-expectation of things to do with life here.

For example: I know full well that if I take something to a tailor and he says "2 days" I will go back on the 3rd day to remind him, and then I'll get it a day or two after that, making 2 days, actually 4 or 5 days. It's not great, I hate it immensely, but I know when to expect things and thus how much time to plan for certain things.

Ever bought some furniture? Delivery in 3 days.... perhaps a week you'll get your stuff delivered, hopefully without it being damaged. We all have lots of stories about delays for things here, its just part of life and you have to adapt or you will end up having a fit like I did this morning!

And now I shall tell you all my experience with HSBC here in Oman.I don't know what single word I'd use to sum it up, perhaps you can make a suggestion below?! I might use 'shocking' or possibly 'diabolical'. But I just feel that I need to find a word stronger than that to express my extreme amazement disappointment of doing my banking with them. I should tell you all that I have a HSBC account in another country, and after all, they are the worlds local bank. Unless you want to bank with them in Oman.

A snap from the board room at HSBC in Oman

Like many expatriate workers here, when I arrived I needed to get a loan - to pay for the rent 6 months up front (I was lucky to negotiate that!). A quick trip down to HSBC in Qurum was in order to get the loan sorted out, I had my employers salary letter and my resident card, and had been told I just needed to sign up for a personal loan. I remember filling out the forms and handing them back to the person dealing with me and sitting there while they typed things into their computer. Finally I was told ok, we'll call you.

A week or so later I received a call asking me to come to the bank to discuss my loans emphasis on the plural there. I am told that HSBC will not be giving me a loan because I have bad credit in Oman - to which I replied how could I possibly have bad credit, I'd only just gotten there, surely I just had no credit? Then, the first of a number of things that have happened to me in HSBC here over the years that has just taken my breath away happened:

The HSBC person states, "Well your wife still owes us RO 5,500 from a loan she took last year, and she has not been paying it back".

Excuse me? My wife was here a year ago? Really? I'm fairly sure she wasn't. But oh no, the all-knowing bank person says your name is "John Doe" yes? (clearly I've edited that, but emphasis on the last name here) -I replied that, yes, that was my name, they did have a copy of my passport and resident card. Then the bank person rather proudly shows me someone called "Jane Doe" in their computer who had a bad debt with them. "See - Doe - she is your wife, you can't have a loan until this one is paid". Being rather shocked that I had apparently been issued not only with a bank account but also a mystery wife by HSBC, it took me a few seconds to process this information. I mean, what would you think when presented with this shocking news?

After gathering my thoughts for a few seconds, I enquired why they had decided that this person was my wife. The answer, in it's simplistic method was that they had never seen my family name before except once, and decided that I must therefore be married to this other person who happened to have the same last name as me. I eventually persuaded them that no, this mystery woman was not my wife, and that my wife was the woman sitting next to me there in the bank (thankfully with her passport). Eventually, after weeks - I think it was about 6 weeks in the end, I got the loan and paid my land lord. I asked them at the time if this would ever happen again, and was assured that steps had been taken to ensure this would not happen in the future.

About half a year later, I needed to get a small car loan so I could buy a second car - I didnt want to continue renting a vehicle for my wife to drive around in, and so decided to buy a small shopping trolley for her, but I needed a loan to pay for it. Back to HSBC. 8 weeks later, after having to go through the exact same nonsense as before, I eventually got the loan. This time my wife and I specifically asked the branch manager to write a note into my bank account that I had absolutely no link with this nefarious Jane Doe that evidentially skipped town and never paid off her loan. We were told "No - it is not necessary". Excuse me but I think it is, but I swore never to take a loan from them again, and I haven't.

After a particularly enthusiastic evening out with some friends, I managed to lose my wallet, and so needed to get a new ATM and credit cards from HSBC. Again I found myself down at the Qurum branch waiting to speak to a bank person. I explained that I had lost my wallet and that I needed to request new cards, it was a fairly simple process, showing my ID and signing a few bits of paper. "No problem" I was told. DHL would deliver my credit cards, but I would have to come in person to HSBC to collect my ATM card.

A week later I get a call from DHL saying, "we have your cards, where do you work so we can deliver them to you"? I told them that I worked in building number xxxx, on way number xxxx in XXXXXX (being the district/village where I worked - eg Qurum). Apparently that was not good enough for DHL, I needed to give them better instructions. What? Pizza hut can find me, why cant DHL - isn't it their business to deliver things?!

But, I digress.

And so after playing "Can you see me now" for half an hour with a DHL driver, I got my hands on my credit cards. I figured, HSBC being the bastion of customer service that it is, that my ATM card must also be ready but they just hadnt found time to call me to come and pick it up yet. Once again, I'm down at the Qurum branch asking to speak to someone about my ATM card. "Oh but you picked it up yesterday" I'm told. Really? Then why am I here now then? I said that I most certainly did not pick it up the day before because I had better things to do with my time than to be standing in that bank looking for my ATM card. As it happened, my ATM card and PIN had been given to a man called Ahmed xxxxx (no where even remotely close to my name). As the incredible truth dawned on me and the bank person, I was promised a new card later that day, and I got it.

Are you still reading? Because there is more!

Recently, I cracked one of my credit cards and needed to get it replaced. At the end of March I went into the new MQ HSBC branch and explained the situation and that I'd like to have a new card issued to replace my damaged one. I specifically requested that the card be delivered to the branch so that I did not have to deal with DHL. No problem sir, it will be here in a few days. I also wanted to order a card for my wife, in her name, but decided that making two things at once with these chimps people would probably cause a meltdown.

After 5 weeks I went back and asked about where the credit card was - I'd been travelling a lot for the last 3 weeks and so had let things slide before enquiring - I never did get a phone call from them. At this point, my wife had been asking for a credit card in her name for quite some time, and so we decided to fill in an application for her credit card, again we specifically chose to have the card delivered to the MQ branch. 3 days later I get a call from a lady at DHL - We have your card - where shall we deliver it to? I told them to take it to the MQ branch, just like how the instructions were on the application.

Today, my wife went to the bank to ask about her card - knowing that she'll have to get me to leave work and meet her there to get the card if it was there. The card was there (in her name but on my account) and she was just issued the card, that was active, with no ID checking at all from the staff in MQ. She enquired again about where my card was, and handed my account number over so they could check. The mystery replacement card is active but no one can find it, and the latest line from the lovely people at HSBC is that I now did not even apply for a replacement card!

I'm now at a loss as to what to do! Have you had a bad banking experience? Care to share?

I nearly forgot - I'm still waiting for my Al Fair vouchers that I traded in my Credit Card points for in DECEMBER last year. Ugh!

More soon!

Heineken Cup Final tonight

For those of you that follow the Heineken Cup rugby tournament, the final is tonight, at 8pm.

This year sees Irish club, Leinster (champions in 2009) show down against English club, Northampton Saints (champions in 2000).

The game is not on OSN, but Jazeera Sports. You can watch it live at the Rugby Club.

Also, there are two other Rugby related events that may be of interest to you:

Firstly, there is the annual Oval Ball, this year to be held on Thursday the 2nd of June at the Afrah ballroom in the Hyatt. Tickets are still available but going quickly, this is one of the best balls held every year (right up there with the ANZO ball and the Canadian Stampede) and I could not recommend it enough. The information to purchase tickets is on the poster below - RO 45 for non-members. This is the 40th anniversary ball for Muscat Rugby here, so come on down and help them all celebrate!
And finally - some of you may know that the clubhouse for the Muscat Rugby Club is unfortunately closing in it's current location in Al Khuwair at the end of the month. The land lord has decided he wants the land back, and to that has marked the end of the clubhouse. The pitch will remain, and so rugby here in Muscat will continue still. To say farewell to the clubhouse, MRFC are throwing one last party. All are welcome to come and watch the local band 123 Orion play live in the clubhouse, free to members, and RO 2 to non-members.

It's the end of an era, and the start of a new one.

More tomorrow!

Hair Care Routine: FAQ's

I've been getting questions about my hair through email, youtube formspring & twitter and a there were few in my most recent post so I thought I'd stop procrastinating and cover everything you need to know about my hair (Bloody Hell this post feels vein!)

Cut & Colour

What is your Natural Hair Colour?
It's dark blonde/light brown, but it gets blonde very easily in the sunshine, especially when I'm at the beach.

Is your hair Ombre backwards?
I get asked this a lot, my hair is lighter at the top from bleached highlights and the sunshine.

How did you get your hair that colour?
It was an accident. My hair was DARK brown. I used colourB4 (something I would never recommend)which lightened it a few shades and made it a lot more red. I then highlighted it myself with bleach foils (again, don't try this at home) and covered with a light caramel brown shade. Now my hair has faded to this colour.

Would you ever go blonde again?
A lot of people tell me I SHOULD be 'this and that' colour and while I appreciate honestly/advice I tend to just colour my hair to however I fancy at the time. I have no fear when it comes to hair colour and I love to experiment. I have an appointment booked for a couple of weeks time to go a little lighter with more caramel tones. I shall post pictures on my new colour once its done.

Have you ever used blonde home hair dyes?
YES! If you are not already blonde/very light mousey brown or a professional I would NOT recommend going anywhere near them.

Do you cut your own hair?
Occasionally yes I trim it, but now I'm working a lot more I'm trying to stick to getting it done professionally.

What do you ask for at the hairdressers?
I usually get max 1/2 inch cut off the lengths (I'm growing it out)then get soft layers put in (about 4 inches shorter than the lengths) and feathering layers at the front. I don't have a fringe/bangs right now. To finish I get it blow dried with LOTS of volume.

Hair Care & Products

Do you use an Olive Oil treatment?
Yes, if my hair is particularly dry BEFORE shampooing I will warm up oil CAREFULLY in the microwave and apply it to dry hair. I wrap it in cling film then a towel and leave for 30 minutes.

What Shampoo and Conditioner do you use?
Right now I'm using Charles Worthington Full Volume Shampoo and Moisture Seal Conditioner. I wash my hair 2 times a week (occasionally 3) At least once a week I shampoo it twice, very thoroughly. Once with a cheap anti-dandruff shampoo as my scalp gets tight and irritated, then my with regular shampoo. When I get out of the shower I apply my hair treatment. Currently I'm using the Umberto Giannini Silky Curls Intensive mask. I also love the John Frieda Miraculous Recovery Strengthening Creme Masque. I leave it on for at least 30 minutes, wrapped up in a towel and then rinse out. After washing I apply Charles Worthington Hair Healer Leave in Conditioner.

How is your hair to shiny?
I'm not entirely sure. Not bleaching my hair to death any more helped a lot. Alway intensively conditioning and protecting my hair helps. I use heat on my hair twice a week, tops and ALWAYS use a heat protectant. Currently I use Charles Worthington Front Row Heat Defence Spritz. I've tured the volume down and all my hot tools. Also not washing my hair much helps a lot! In between washes I use Batiste Dry Shampoo in Fresh.

Finally some of my favourite styling products...
For blow-drying I like the Umberto Giannini Enviable Blow Dry Spray.
For Shine I like the John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Finishing Creme.

I hope this post has helped answer any of your questions. These are all products I've purchased at boots and I've put in links wherever possible. Let me know if you would like more 'styling' posts or videos.

Much Love,

Onna

My Everyday Hair

WARNING: PHOTO HEAVY POST

After the #bbloggers chat on twitter last night (arranged by the lovely Fee) I felt inspired not only to blog, but to do something slightly different so here is my everyday hair. What makes it 'everyday' for me (its quite a lot of effort) is that it lasts for three days in my hair making it incredibly low maintenance. If your thinking of recreating this look bare in mind, my hair is dry to normal and very rarely gets greasy. Its medium to long length and VERY thick. I also recently had it cut so its a little shorter, with soft layers :) Loves it!

Before
Step 1:
Wash hair thoroughly. I like to shampoo twice and I only wash my hair 2/3 times per week. I also put my Umberto Giannini Curl Friends Silky Curls Intensive Mask on for 30 minutes. After rinsing I apply Charles Worthington Hair Healer Leave in Condition. Leave to dry naturally.

Step 2:
Generously apply heat protection. I use Charles Worthington Front Row Heat Defence Spritz. I use loads to make sure my hair stays shiny. Brush Through and leave to dry. I like to add a zig zag parting with a rat tail comb. Just pull the hair back, away from the face, make a zig zag motion with your comb.
Step 3:
Divide hair into sections. I also like to turn down the heat on my straighteners (babyliss ones) to give a softer look and hopefully preserve my hair! Start to curl hair by wrapping sections around the straighteners, I'd say about 2 inch sections,(yes thats a lot)and pull the straighteners through the hair. My sections tend to get smaller at the top but I dont curl the fringe area, I just flick it out.
Step 4:
Once all your hair is curled gently brush through, to create a softer look. Tease the roots at the crown to add more volume. If you like the messy look you can also tease the lengths of the hair, but your style won't last as long. Use John Frieda Stain Shine Finishing Creme to tame frizz and fly aways. Finish with Hairspray. I use Vo5 Strong Hold.

After

I'm back on twitter if you didn't already know, so feel free to follow me. Also just incase your wondering, I bought all of these products. Let me know if you like these types of hair posts.

Much Love,
Onna

Muriya Photography Competition

As originally blogged about here on Muscat Mutterings in March this year, the finalists are having their work exhibited between the 15th and 18th of May (Sunday - Tuesday). So if you are interested in this, feel free to attend any time between 8am-1pm and 5pm-8pm on any of the three days.

Blogger has been down, big things happened in Salalah last night and today.

Just a quick little blog today.

Blogger had some problems and they have deleted all posts and comments made since some point on Wednesday night. Consequently, my blog about Merge 104.8's launch date on June 7th has been scrubbed by Blogger. I'm not sure if they will restore it, they are apparently restoring peoples posts and comments. If you are reading this and was the commenter that posted about the Dhofari Power company, please get in touch - please email me at my usual email address - mrsythe *at* gmail *dot* com

Last night, at 8pm, the internet and mobile phones were switched off in the Dhofar region and helicopters and army trucks moved in on central Salalah. Many people were arrested and the army have occupied the area, preventing people from massing there today after Friday prayers. The mobile phone networks were switched back on around 10pm last night, but with very weak signals. Reportedly, the same actions took place here in Muscat on those who were still protesting in the Wizarat area of Al Khuwair.

I figure this will all be in the headlines of tomorrow's newspapers. It was a fairly annoying time for Blogger to stop working.

More tomorrow.

Craic Attack - the winner!

Muscat Rugby gets a win against Doha, playing Bahrain this weekend.

Well done to the Muscat Rugby guys, who in their 40th anniversary match against Doha last Friday managed to bring in the win in an entertaining game. The final score was 26-7. There is one more game left before the clubhouse is closed permanently. It is this weekend, on Friday at 3pm, against the boys from Bahrain.

This will be the last ever game to be hosted by the Rugby Club's own clubhouse. The club will continue to have access to the field, but no more clubhouse and associated facilities. So please do come down on Friday and watch the match and help us all celebrate 40 years of Rugby in Oman in the clubhouse afterwards.

As always there will be specials on food and drink available, and your patronage will be very much appreciated.

More soon!

Rock Bottom's racism and violence continues.

Rock Bottom's security guards have been written about before, noticeably by Muscat Jet Driver and Muscat's Undercover Dragon.(A special smile to the ever-amusing depiction of a meat head by the Jet Driver).

On Thursday evening (5th May), the renowned bouncers decided to operate an entrance policy: If you're white, you don't pay a cover charge. If you are of colour, you have to pay a cover charge. This policy was being enforced even on groups of people made up of all races, with the darker ones being stopped and requested to pay. The bouncers were specifically targeting people of Indian decent.

I'm told that one particular South African man decided that he was sick of this treatment and so knocked over the bouncers little table outside the entrance to the night club. Having realised in his alcoholic fuelled outburst that this was probably not the best way to go about things, decided to make a swift exit and run from the now agitated bouncers.

What happens next is, quite simply, incredible. I've corroborated this from 3 separate accounts of what happened from people that witnessed this.

There were 4 bouncers wearing white shirts in the entrance area to the club, 2 chased after the man, the other two went into the club and presumably called in reinforcements.

Outside, the first of the two bouncers ran up behind the man, who was now walking away, and with absolutely no verbal warnings just smashed his fist into the back of the man's head, dropping him to the floor. More white-shirted bouncers appeared onto the scene, a total of around 15, and proceeded to kick and punch the man who was now on the floor. A white companion of the victim on the floor attempted to pull people off his friend and pull the man up from the ground. This man took a reported 8 punches to his face from the bouncers, and did not throw one single punch in his own defence - purely only looking to save his friend on the ground from a very serious mauling. Thats some dedication right there I'd say.

There were many witnesses, including the Manager of the hotel, a certain "Ms Mimi", who then threatened the white man that the ROP were coming to the scene, and that she had video evidence of assault on her staff. 15 men kicking the living sh** out of one customer victim (of racism) on the floor apparently constitutes assault of her staff.

Now, this may sound like a drunken story of a typical night gone wrong involving bouncers. Except this is an all too common occurrence that happens at the Rock Bottoms club here in Muscat, and these bouncers appear to think that they can get away with stuff like this. And evidentially, they are getting away with this outrageous behaviour.

If you are going out this weekend, consider visiting another bar. Why take the risk of being abused like this, why give an establishment that allows it's staff to act this way your patronage? There are other options out there. Have you experienced problems with the staff at Rock Bottoms? Let us all know below.

PS - dont forget to enter into the competition for free tickets to Nemr Abou Nassar this weekend!

Merge 104.8 transponder goes active. Hi FM shuffle their schedules.

It's been a while since I've posted anything, and for that, well I have a few nice things lined up for you to read this week and next. Starting with this...

By now you should all have heard about the new English language FM radio station due to open shortly here in the Sultanate. There is still no word on the official start date for this new station, headed up by previously popular on Dubai 92 FM & Coast 103.2 FM Disk Jockey, Chris Fisher.

I quite like the official logo for the new radio station, originally leaked by fellow blogger (and winner of Oman Collective Intelligence's Top 15 Oman Blogs list) (thanks for the #2 spot by the way OCI!) the Undercover Dragon from Muscat Confidential on the 10th of April. What do you guys think about it? It does kind of remind me of MTV Arabia's style though, but I like that so it's fine with me :)

The English language radio market here in Muscat is now about to get a little bit more competitive with the launch of this new station. Marketing budgets in the country are beginning to increase, with a noticeable increase in other than print media advertising from the Financial and Telecommunications sectors in the last 6 months.

The most competitive part of the day for these three English language radio stations here in Oman (Oman FM 90.4, Hi FM 95.9 and Merge 104.8) is naturally going to be the morning show. Which perhaps may be why Erin from Hi FM has switched from the evening show to the morning show (6-9), leaving Darren the 9-1 slot, Kathy in her usual afternoon slot and new Canadian DJ, Marcus is handling the afternoon rush hour show. So it would seem Hi FM is going for a more North American sounding brand of radio, even in a lot of the advertisements now, it features fairly prominently accents from across the Atlantic.

So we have Erin, seasoned from a spell in Egypt on Nile FM (and 17 years in the business), and Chris Fisher, experienced from 2 different radio stations up in the UAE (and has been working in radio since 1993) going up head to head. Radio Sultanate of Oman FM 90.4's morning lynchpin, Faiq Al Mugheiry (known as Faiq on the Mike) probably will not see too much of a change in his audience, as the younger demographic of the audience here in Oman have already switched over to Hi FM. So in my 5 minute analysis of the situation, it looks like Merge FM will either take listeners from Hi FM, switch from an Arabic station, or will have to convince potential listeners to turn on their radios and turn off their iPods on their way to work.

It'll be interesting to see, or rather, hear, what goes on in the next month or two as Merge launches onto the market. I'm guessing that there will be lots of give-aways. I'm also interested in how much it will cost to advertise on air now that there is direct competition.

As soon as I know the launch date for Merge 104.8, I'll let you all know, if you don't know before me!

I need your advice...

I'm so sorry I have posted in ages (over a month) and I'm afraid this post isn't going to be the most exciting. I thought I'd give you a quick update as to whats going on with me and ask for all your advice.

So I've had an interesting month...

I got a job, its just retail but I'm enjoying earning money and keeping busy. So far so good.

My parents planned a trip to Sweden to visit relatives but after learning my nan is now in a home, and my "auntie" (technically not related) has become very sick I decided I would fly out for a long weekend to see them at the end of May. Perhaps this is one of the reasons I've been so stressed.

I realised, as sad as it sounds, how little friends I have. I know tons of people in my town who I have the odd chat with etc but the amount of people who actually call me up on a regular basis, or who I could go to in a crisis is very little. Probably because most of my closest friends are travelling/at university, which SUCKS!

Random but true; stayed at my friends house after a few drinks in town and woke up with a swollen face, literally looked like I'd been punched!! Thank god it went down after two or three days!!

To top it off I was kicked out of college!! Most of you know since last September I've been studying Journalism at a local college, a course which gets students into university. I'm going to be honest and admit I've been struggling with the course, mainly due to a build up of personal problems; but I persevered and kept up with most of my work, got good marks on all my written coursework and a distinction in my exam. Despite this my lecturer thought I was emotionally struggling far too much to be able to complete the course, so she pointed out that it might be best if I did not continue (just over a month before the course finishes).

After many conversations between my parents, myself, her and other staff members I was basically told I wouldn't be allowed back. Although, in all honestly I didn't always enjoy the course, I clashed with my lecturer and I definitely was extremely stressed, I am absolutely gutted! I got into all the universities I wanted to go to, but will now not be allowed in, because I can't finish the course. I am also left feeling useless, unfulfilled and bored! I am a very ambitious person and now I am out of control and aimless.

Seriously though, what do I do with myself now? Work in retail forever? There is absolutely nothing wrong with that but its not for me and I absolutely loved writing. I also love being in education, I actually like writing essays (Loser). I just don't know what to do, I have literally not been this depressed for two years! Help!

To finish of just a quick FOTN from the over week... gotta put some makeup in this post somewhere ;) Stylish picture I think you will agree...
